Chess Club

Articles
I. Club Name
a. www.uofuchessclub.org
II. Purpose
a. To provide the University of Utah students and community the opportunity to learn about and play chess, and to provide support for chess at the University of Utah.
III. Membership
a. Any current University of Utah student, faculty, staff, alumni and friends interested in chess are qualified for membership.
b. All attendees have the right to participate in any club activity, but only members can play in chess club tournaments, and only students in the student tournament. There is no membership fee. A membership is good for one year.
c. Officers of the chess club reserve the right to refuse membership to anyone.
IV. Meetings
a. Chess club meetings will be held on a weekly basis year around as needed.
b. Regular and special meetings will be scheduled via email to each member of the chess club’s executive board.
V. Executive Board
a. The chess club’s executive board is composed of the President/Treasurer, Vice Presidents, Website Administrator, and Adviser(s). The purpose of the President/Treasurer will be to keep track of funds, equipment, enroll new members and keep track of current members, oversee other aspects (ASUU funding, tournaments, non-profit fund raising, advertising, purchasing). The Event Coordinator will be in charge of event planning and informing members of the upcoming events.
b. An unofficial officer will be appointed. The unofficial officer will replace an officer that vacates a position. A new unofficial officer will be selected. The unofficial officer is not part of the chess club’s executive board.
VI. Elections
a. Each officer is selected by majority vote of the executive board. The term of each officer is one year. There are no term limits. A new election will be held when an officer’s position becomes vacant.
b. Nominees can apply to be an officer by email at uofuchessclub@hotmail.com at any time during the year, or at a chess club meeting.
c. Nominees will present their qualifications via email at uofuchessclub@hotmail.com, or at a chess club meeting. An election for a new officer will be held when an officer leaves the club.
d. In the case of a run-off, the Adviser(s) decide the winner.
VII. Funds
a. The club will be funded through ASUU and from donations/gifts. All club expenditure decisions will be made by the majority vote of the club’s executive board, and the President/Treasurer will make final approval of purchases. Revenue will be given to the treasurer to put into the club account. All members of the executive board have the right to see the club accounting records.
b. Funds collected from ASUU or from donations/gifts will only be used for chess club purposes.
c. A club bank account is set up for non-profit donations. The president and Adviser (s) will be the only ones allowed to make withdrawals from the bank account. Withdrawals can only be made in the amount voted on through majority vote of the executive board.
VIII. Committees
a. There will be no committees.
IX. Affiliations
a. This club will be affiliated with the ASUU.
X. Adviser(s)
a. The selection of the Adviser(s) will be made by majority vote of the club’s executive board. Duties of the Adviser(s) include advising the club with all decisions. The Adviser(s)’ decision will break a tie vote.
XI. Amendments
a. Any member can suggest an amendment to this constitution by emailing uofuchessclub@hotmail.com, or suggest an amendment at a chess club meeting. The suggestion will be amended upon the majority vote of the club’s executive board.
XII. Bylaws
a. The procedures for the inclusion of any rules or regulations specific to the chess club will be to email suggestion(s) to uofuchessclub@hotmail.com, or make suggestion(s) at a chess club meeting. The suggestion(s) will be included upon the majority vote of the chess club’s executive board.
